Character

Name: Madame Foster
Source: Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends (OU)
Type: RGer
Canon Point: Sometime vaguely before "Destination Imagination"
History: Wiki Link, but I feel this page is insufficient so imma TL;DR about my observations of her history as revealed throughout the episodes and block party comics. Here we go!!

Madame Foster was born to wealthy parents who were appropriately prim and proper. Sometime when she was very young, she created an Imaginary Friend named Funny Bunny, who later became known/renamed as Mr. Herriman. Funny Bunny's purpose was to sing and dance for her, but she also would blame him for spills, messes and other bouts of childish mischief, so as not to get in trouble with her strict parents. The bunny was mortified by this and became obsessive about cleaning up her messes. Decades later, things are exactly the same - Even as an old lady, she sees the world through the eyes of a child and has not grown up even a little bit. It is seen as strange to not abandon your imaginary friend by a certain age, but Madame Foster has spent all of her years directing her adult responsibilities to Herriman and living a free life full of adventure and excitement.

But what a life she's had! While the details of her prime are not focused on, the existence of Frankie Foster shows that she has some sort of experience with motherhood as well as being a grandma. She also traveled the world at some point; she's mentioned that she would love to revisit the Samburu tribe in Kenya. A news report and a trophy room in the Foster Mansion reveal that Foster is regarded by others not only as a philanthropist, but as a national hero - She owns a gold placard granted by the U.S. President and even has her own holiday.

The Madame is by no means the sort of person who lost out on human interaction by indulging her fantasies. She has maintained a wide social circle - it's clear that she knows a lot of other old people, many of whom she's been friends with since her younger years. She has a rivalry with a woman named Jerkins that has been ongoing since high school, but while there may have been a serious grudge in the past it seems now they just do it for fun. Likewise, an old man named Rivers across the street from the house bickers with her daily and they have a habit of throwing things and punking each other, but he has a secret crush on her.

However, most notable is her founding of Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. In the canon, these friends, though imagined up by children, are as real as anyone else, and are treated somewhere between pets and people - they are mostly pets, but some are humanoid and they can get jobs and stuff so who knows. However, when a kid grows up, they are often forced to leave their friends behind, and Foster provides them with a place where they can stay for free until some other kid comes to adopt them. It was most likely initially founded by the inheritance money from Foster's rich parents, until Foster gradually squandered it away and they had to become a charity organization. The living conditions seem quite comfortable, but from the way Frankie acts, it seems the house is always barely treading on their funds and they are in constant need of donations. Foster usually lets Herriman and Frankie handle all of the boring things like that, though, and is herself probably a big factor in their financial woes considering that she has shown evidence of manic spending - she once spent all their funds on a giant golden vault with which to hold their funds. However, considering their funds were still enough to buy said giant vault, and they are still able to feed hundreds to thousands of imaginary creatures, it's safe to assume that her reputation has earned her some regular donors at least.

Another interesting thing of note that was brought up in the pilot but never heard of again - Foster's not only takes in imaginary friends, but it also locks away imaginary monsters called "Extremosauri" that were dreamed up by the more horrible kids. So there may be some implied behind-the-scenes badassery regarding the capturing and caging of these monsters. There is strong evidence that Foster is used to staring down dangerous creatures by herself - In the episode where the inhabitants of the house go camping, Foster fearlessly hypnotizes a grizzly bear with nothing but her gaze, and is later seen riding it as a mount as she commands everything else in the forest to do her bidding. Including the bees. Just think about those implications for a moment.

Personality:

Madame Foster is, at first glance, a sweet little old lady who calls people "dearie" and bakes the best cookies ever, all while living a sedentary lifestyle inside of her charity organization for the reality-impaired. This mental image is not quite correct. She is a lot feistier than her looks would have you believe, and a huge troublemaker when she wants to be. She follows whims irresponsibly, such as untying sentient balloons from their spot on the roof, letting them all sail helplessly into the sky. She has even straight-up robbed an 8-year-old boy by pickpocketing him during a long hug.

So, Madame Foster is not exactly nice at all. She is, however, a goodhearted person. It was her idea to create Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, which initially started with just one friend that she took in out of the kindness of her heart, and eventually just... spread to include all of the abandoned friends that found their way to the home, to becoming a full on orphanage with adoption papers and a system. She refuses to turn a resident of the house out into the cold, even if they are major nuisances to her and everyone around and she hates them. It's just against her principles. And those are strong principles too, because in most cases, in her own words "I don't like rules very much."

Additionally, she's just as prone to random acts of kindness as she is to random acts of cruelty - in one of the comics, Eduardo has a lucky penny that he finds missing, and it turns out Madame Foster took it so she could have it framed for him. A very random act indeed. I think that when she is randomly mean, it's mostly unintentional in a childish way. She can at times be very oblivious to the maliciousness of others, making her relatively easy to swindle or recruit as an accomplice to schemes. She's really quite pure.

Although a friend of Madame Foster's is a friend for life, she also will hold grudges for much longer than their reasonable statute of limitations, like hating her neighbor for decades because he never returned a borrowed cup of sugar. It seems that this is more because she thinks grudges are fun to hold, rather than actually being angry, though. She simply likes having a rival around to make her life more exciting.

Despite all of her kookiness though, it's clear that everyone in the house respects her. In the middle of a huge group argument during the pilot, all it took was the distant sound of her cane tapping against the ground to get everyone to fall silent, make way, and listen to her judgment. Foster is brave - when outside forces threaten the house or the imaginary friends, she will often take an active stance in defending against them.

As an old person, she cannot stand the notion of retirement - in particular, the inactive lifestyle it promotes. She believes life is for the living and that you should act your shoe size, not your age. Considering that Madame Foster's feet are really tiny, this could explain her total immaturity that she often displays. But honestly, she doesn't allow her age to get in the way of anything, be it keeping her imaginary friend, throwing wild parties, or streaking in the woods. Although she'll still use it as an excuse for not going up and down too many stairs, which is valid considering she does use a cane to walk.

Her favorite sweets are black licorice and violet flavored candy. She often tries to use adages, but half the time she completely screws them up. "I hear the early worm gets the hen!" "You'll take to that like a horse takes to molasses!" etc. etc.

Abilities: Foster does not have any specified supernatural abilities, however, she tends to operate on cartoon logic + either the rule of cool or the rule of funny. So you'll see her accomplishing crazy things like the aforementioned animal hypnotizing, or performing athletic maneuvers that are possible for human beings, just... you wouldn't ever expect a tiny old grandma to be able to pull them off. She also seems to have a sort of perception where she can judge what kind of an imagination a person has just by looking at them, but that is probably a learned wisdom that came from dealing with imaginary friends and their owners rather than any sort of magic.
